A Photographic Study of All Things West Virginia

A Tribute to Shop & Go

A battle between two convenience stores has been waging for years just down the road from my home near Charleston, West Virginia.  The two stores are situated across the road from each other at a busy intersection, each offering gasoline, beer, and racks of Little Debbie snack cakes.  But, as the famous saying goes, “This town ain’t big enough for the both of us!”.

Yes, we can finally declare a victor in this economic fight to the death.  Mountain Mart is king, Shop & Go is no more.

Everyone knew it would happen.  Shop & Go had deficient parking and ancient gas pumps, heck they even got flooded at least twice a year.  But the place had character.  And, they sold liquor, the great equalizer!

Still, it was not enough.  After many years of faithful service to the community a big For Sale/Lease sign has gone up in the windows.   I can only hope that the new owners/tenants are half as entertaining as those that came before them.

The following image is my tribute to Shop & Go, it captures the vibe better than any words I can string together.  R.I.P.
