The Repair Pad

Early morning roadside scene in Quick, West Virginia.

Had a couple technique breakdowns during the making of this image, but managed to coax out enough image quality to have a passable blog post.  (Note to self:  remember to check and see if your polarizer is attached to your camera before cranking the ISO up to 1600 and trying to handhold slow shutter speeds).

In this age of personal cell phones it seems that pay phones are being slowly phased out of existence.  This particular pay phone adorns the outside of an abandoned convenience store, but the presence of a soda bottle and a cigarette package made me think that if you picked it up you just might get a dial tone.

Roadside scene, Braxton County, WV.

From a technical standpoint I struggled trying to balance the lighting in this image.  Hopefully nothing looks too out of whack.

When I was shooting this I did not notice the way the background mountain echoes the shape of the rooftop (so much for the all-seeing photographer theory!).  Upon reviewing the image on my computer that echoing shape leaped out at me and made me want to return sometime to explore the possibilities further.  Unfortunately it is some distance from my home though, so we’ll see.

BTK Motors

An unfortunately named business seen while vacationing earlier this summer in Clearwater, FL.

I thought I might come across Ted Bundy Accounting Services, or perhaps Jeffrey Dahmer Insurance Agency, but no it was only BTK Motors along this street.

(For those unfamiliar with the reference, find info here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Rader).

Air.  Ice.  ATM.  Phone.  All the conveniences you could ever ask for, situated conveniently side-by-side at the business that’s all about convenience-  the convenience store.  This image was made while stopped at a conveniently located Go Mart near Charleston, West Virginia.

Shreve’s Store

On a recent visit to the Smoke Hole along the South Branch of the Potomac River in Pendleton County, West Virginia, I happened upon Shreve’s Store.  I was tired and thirsty at the time, so I pulled in hoping to score some refreshments.  The “Live Bait” sign in the window gave me hope that this remote country store was open for business, but alas everything was closed down for renovation.

So, of course, I did what any photographer worth his salt would do.  I made an image!  So here it is, in all its glory, Shreve’s Store.  May the Great Nightcrawler In the Sky bless them with brisk business when they re-open.

Gold and Tombstones

I have driven by this business located in Elkview, West Virginia, countless times and have always been fascinated by the eclectic array of services being offered under one roof.  As near as I can tell they are currently selling gold and jewelry inside while engraving tombstones on the outside.  Expert repairs of an undefined sort are also being offered.

It is said that diversification is key in these uncertain economic times.  If so, I would expect this business to soon prosper and open franchises in other cities.  Where else can you have a ring re-sized and get a tombstone engraved while you wait?
